Generally, the people of eastern Kentucky are hard working, God fearing, honest folks, but there are always those less than honorable characters in every society. It is the interaction between a dishonest law enforcement officer and an overly ambitious, sociopathic businessman that is described in Boone Springs.
The effect of valueless, sometimes psychopathic men on those around them makes for fascinating reading. Boone Springs is a story of a good brother and an amoral brother, a good cop and bad cop, of two loving relationships and a relationship filled only with lust. It also the story of a good man who, through the years, attempts to solve the rape and murder of his wife. It is a tale of the differing views of what is right and what is wrong and how those views affect those who hold them.
The novel demonstrates how some never view what they do as bad or abnormal while others are affected all of their lives by a single misdeed. State Police Captain Dave Cantrell made one mistake in his career; he didn’t arrest an abused woman whom he knew had assisted in the murder of her husband. This one misstep comes back to haunt his otherwise exemplary career, twenty years later. It is with this on his conscience that he must deal with Bill June Marcum, a completely corrupt and psychotic sheriff.
Richard Adams must deal with the rape and murder of his wife, Flo. The couple had a wonderful marriage until the sheriff and his friends showed up to rape and kill her while Richard was away. Junior Adams, Richard’s brother, is the crime partner of Sheriff Marcum and places his illegal activities above telling his brother that he knows who murdered Flo.
Ultimately, Junior’s extramarital affair and dishonest dealings destroy his family and precipitate his own demise. Billy June’s kidnapping of a teenage girl and the murder of her boyfriend drives him to become more and more desperate. Richard with Dave Cantrell’s assistance closes in on Billy June and forces the sheriff into final acts of mayhem and murder.
In a fast paced conclusion Captain Cantrell and Richard are nearly killed by the Sheriff and Junior’s amassed fortune is used by Richard in an unusual way to help law enforcement in the eastern part of the Commonwealth.
Boone Springs will be enjoyed by those who enjoy a crime/drama story with several plot twists and by those who prefer unusual love stories. While the novel is fiction it is based on several actual occurrences in Kentucky. It will be noticed by many readers that criminals are criminals regardless of where they live. The only difference between an eastern Kentucky lawbreaker and a New York City criminal is the accent. The sadness and heartbreak they cause others is well documented in Boone Springs.
