The hero of this story has a career in the big city dealing with lawyers and lawsuits. He longs to become a rancher and live like Roy Rogers. His wife agrees to allow him to become a rancher if she can be management and make the decisions. He will be labor and implement her decisions. He promptly makes an offer on a New Mexico ranch only to find that she feels what ranch to buy and in what state is part of management not labor.
Their search takes labor and management from Arizona to Tenn. They encounter ticks and the most dangerous animal in North America. They have to deal with blizzards,urologists and government agencies sent out to help them.
They deliver calves in the dark of the night, in the snow and watch their cat make a fool of a fox. They observe as a coyote demonstrates the advantage of socialism to a badger and a rattlesnake displays the strike first-buzz later philosophy common to some of the less chivalrous reptiles of the region.
