Americans flooded into the Oregon country, but a brave Canadian saved their lives.
This is the story of the settlement of Oregon. In the 1840s there was a rush to Oregon, which was rumored to be a land of milk and honey. The trip was long and hard, and often left pioneer settlers in grave peril as winter lowered. But Dr. John McLoughlin, chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Vancouver, repeatedly rescued the Yanks even though ownership of the territory was disputed by his government and that of the United States. The Americans were not grateful, and assailed the man who had helped them the most. But the chief factor managed to live out the rest of his life as a contented citizen of his adopted country.
