Billy’O - Lost in the Promised Land - Book Two, is the second volume of a four part coming of age story about Billy O’Shea, a teenage survivor of the Irish Famine. The continuing auto-biography of Billy O’Shea spans almost thirty years, from the age of thirteen at the time of the Irish Famine to the California Gold Rush and through to Billy O’Shea’s heroic exploits during the blood stained years of the American Civil War.
By the conclusion of Book I, Billy has arrived in St. Louis. He is penniless and in need of food and a place to sleep. He is drawn into perpetrating a robbery with his companions that becomes violent and destroys the life of an innocent man. Billy abandons his friends and seeks a way to return east to Maine.
As the Billy’O Epic continues in Book II, Billy O’Shea is conflicted by the important choice he must make; go on west to California or return east to face justice for the crimes he committed in Boston. Noah Caleb, an aging trail guide takes Billy under wing and convinces him he should go on to California. Billy reunites with his former partners in crime briefly as they venture forth up the Missouri River to Westport Landing. Jason Brody and Lafe Watson have joined a mining company while Billy travels with a wagon company of Ohio farmers bound for the Sacramento Valley in California.
As the journey west begins from Independence, Billy receives letters and a diary from a friend in Maine. Billy receives a warning that a bounty hunter is on his trail and there is a wanted poster out on him with a bounty of one thousand dollars.
Billy O’Shea faces major challenges during the long and perilous journey to California including a sad and violent tragedy that forces Billy to make important decisions that affect the lives of all the wagon company members and then he is forced into accepting a major responsibility he did not bargain for. Billy records this journey in a diary that chronicles the day by day adventure and challenge of the journey to California.
Billy faces more challenges as he attempts avoid capture by the bounty hunter, Giles Morgan and returns to Maine to be reunited with his adopted brother Roddy. He has a strange and disturbing reunion with Erin O’Neill, leading to an unexpected climax in Book II that changes Billy O’Shea’s life in tragic terms as Book II comes to a close.
