In 1912, Tony Jannus sets a record for the longest flight over water. In spite of an acute appendicitis, crashes, fires and terrible weather he completes the flight. He becomes the first licensed airline pilot in the United States and is chief pilot for the first scheduled airline. He pilots the aeroplane for the first parachute jump; he takes Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice for her first aeroplane ride. Many women admire him, but he finds it difficult to make a commitment. As a test pilot for Glenn Curtiss, he is sent to Russia to train the Czar's naval aviators how to fly amphibious aeroplanes. While in Russia, he becomes involved in World War I and participates in combat. He returns to the US and falls in love, but is sent back to Russia to train more Russian aviators.
