The Field History Branch of the Marine Corps History and Museums Division is
made up of two reserve organizations: a 12 member Individual Mobilization Augmentee
detachment and a volunteer Mobilization Training Unit. Members of the Branch are
either staff non-commissioned officers or field grade officers who have served on active duty, often during real world contingencies, and who hold a variety of military occupational specialties.
Their primary function is to deploy with operational units as field historians and
combat artists, documenting the Marine Corps’ participation during significant world events. Field historians, working from the top down, focus on the commander’s intent and how forward deployed subordinate units operationalize the plan. Information gathered through such first-hand accounts provides details that are unavailable through external sources and offers a perspective that may be more relevant to military professionals than that of civilian observers.
