A Tale of the Ragged Mountains, is not as well-known as most of Poe’s other works, but does have the usual “Poe” twist at the end.
A man named Bedloe relates the story of what happened to him on one of his customary long rambles in the Ragged Mountains of Virginia. According to his story, his morning walk started out as usual, but soon he heard unexpected drumming and a metallic rattling sound followed by "a dusky-visaged and half-naked man rushing past with a shriek," and followed by a hyena.
Overcome by this bizarre encounter, Bedloe sat down beneath a tree only to notice that its shadow was that of a palm tree not native to Virginia.
As Bedloe later recounts his inexplicable journey and return, his doctor strangely seems to know the story already.
