Rip Van Winkle, "a simple, good-natured fellow" of Dutch-American descent, lives in a pleasant village at the foot of the Catskill Mountains in New York where he passes his time hunting, fishing, attending country frolics, running errands for housewives, playing with the children, and sitting in the shade with his cronies Derrick Van Bummel, a schoolmaster, and Nicholas Vedder, a local tavern owner.

One autumn day, to avoid his wife's incessant nagging Rip wanders into the mountains with his dog Wolf. In a mysterious hollow, he discovers the ghosts of Henry Hudson and his crew, playing nine pins. After sampling some of their brew, Rip falls asleep, only to awaken twenty years later in unusual circumstances.

It seems to be morning, his gun is rotted and rusty, his beard has grown a foot long, and Wolf is nowhere to be found. Rip returns to his village where he finds that he recognizes no one.
