Roane is a Master in name only. He has always disdained claiming a band of men to lead and excluded himself from the normal rituals of the desert kingdom of Oasis, but when he learns his childhood friend, the swordmaster, is trying to wrest control of Oasis from the Sword Council by forcing war with the neighboring kingdoms he must act.
The key to stopping the war is the captured daughter of King Ardsen; if he can return her before the swordmaster kills her and before the forces of Catharis enter the desert, then perhaps he can stop the war. The only problem: his banished and forgotten older brother has taken her from certain death and intends to make her his wife, but first he is going to incite a revolt by telling the slaves of Oasis she died at the hands of the swordmaster.
Roane must free the princess from his brother's clutches, escape the swordmaster's forces in the desert and somehow manage to deliver the princess to the king without being killed by the forces of Catharis that sit between him and the king.
