This was the first Scarlet Pimpernel novel to be written, however it is third in the series if read chronologically. It should be read after THE FIRST SIR PERCY and before SIR PERCY LEADS THE BAND. This historical adventure is set during the French Revolution at around September 1792. The elusive Scarlet Pimpernel sets out to rescue men, women and children facing the horrors of the guillotine, while evading the relentless pursuit of his arch enemy, Chauvelin.
