Continuing her voyage across the Atlantic to rescue Eddie (which began in BRIMSTONE AND LILY), Verity and the crew of the Penelope's Kiss are attacked by musket-wielding Greek Furies. The monsters are fought off, but it is clear that somehow the Merchantry is able to track Verity even on the open sea.
An alternative plan to drop her off on the Spanish coast is prepared. When one of the officers coughs up a Dreamworm, leaving the ship becomes imperative. But before their course can be changed, an iron submarine attacks. Verity is pulled overboard by mermen, who give her a breathing spell, fight off Victorian frogmen, and tow her beneath the waves all night until they reach shore. There, all alone, she is captured by Arab fighters who are on their way to rescue the wife of their leader, held prisoner in a castle on the Portuguese border.
With the aid of gypsies, and Jasper's magic, they infiltrate the fortress and liberate the lady, but not without great loss of life. Verity is separated from her companions and chased across the border by the castle guards. Her only friend is a talking French basset hound named the Duke, whom she saved from slavery in the castle.
The next morning Verity intercedes when three men on horseback pursue a girl about her age. They are ancient Greeks and believe her to be a savage monster. With the aid of the suddenly-arrived Tyrell and his winged horse the girl is preserved from harm. But soon hundreds of zombie women, acolytes of Dionysus, assail them all. Fleeing into the city of Cumae, one of the gates to Hades, the humans find themselves besieged by ten thousand of the undead Maenads. The girl does, indeed, turn into a monster, a chimera, but Verity manages to control her and even use her against the zombie attackers.
Yet the city falls, its residents retreat to the Acropolis for a last stand, and it is up to Verity to save the day (though several Greek gods come to her aid when Dionysus himself appears). Before that happens Verity discovers a family member she never knew she had and encounters even more fearsome poop monsters. Back on the ship again, her mother finally reveals the shocking truth about her lost father.
