In the Fall of 1970, Kevin and Brenda enter college in Ohio. Kevin is an intelligent, likeable, easy going guy. Brenda is intelligent and a liberated woman, but she's more inhibited than Kevin. They meet during their freshman year, fall in love and get married while still in college. The social and political problems and changes during the 1970's influence them and sometimes dominate their lives during their college years.
After college and against Brenda's wishes, Kevin takes a job offered to him by his father. Later Brenda opens her own shop. Brenda hires Paul, who is still in high school, to work for her in her shop and in time he becomes obsessed with her and believes she is in an unhappy marriage. After he graduates, Paul kills Kevin to release Brenda from her unhappy marriage and he expects her to reward him by marrying him.
For Brenda, the death of her husband isn't the only tragedy she must experience. Sandy who loves Paul, believes Brenda manipulated Paul into killing her husband. After Paul is arrested for killing Kevin, she decides to help Paul if she can and she is willing to do whatever needs to be done to make for trouble for Brenda.
Is Brenda guilty or is she innocent?
