Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Terry Riley can't seem to catch a break. As Senior Political Reporter for the Washington Post, he's received death threats and taken on his share of scumbags, but this day trumps it all. After being skewered by a corrupt DC politician Senator Daniel Pritchard, he barely survives a vicious beating, and begins to realize there may be a contract out on his life. Yep, a great day!
Things are about to go from bad to worse when Riley decides to cover the first International Summit on the Environment in Mexico City. Despite still being a wanted man in Mexico, he burns to uncover the deceit surrounding Pritchard and "Hands Across The Border" projects.
Riley decides to head South of the border where all the world leaders are about to convene for an unprecedented global conference that will effect world policies of climate control and other major environmental issues. But when he arrives in Mexico, he soon learns that thousands of Chiapas rebel villagers in the Mexican Badlands are being wiped out by a sadistic general and a mysterious epidemic, and he's landed smack in the middle of it all.
Forced to align himself with Carlos Ramos, a dangerous rebel leader, to stay alive and to get his story, Riley is thrust into a web of political corruption, illegal drugs, and genocide. But this isn't new territory for the jaded and cynical Riley, and he's about to get the story of his career... if he lives that long.
Riley has made an art form of exposing political corruption, scandalous politicians, and illegal activity, but it's his self-destructive actions of late that are calling in his chips. He seems to be on a permanent "bender" and can't help burning bridges with everyone who cares about him, including his amorous colleague, Kate Walker, who would follow him to the ends of the earth. Yet there is a deep secret Riley carries that he can't come to terms with and the devil on his shoulder is offering him the tastiest of Death Wishes!
Blinded by alcohol, revenge, and the need to right a boat-load of wrongs, Riley jeopardizes his career to follow a hunch to the one place on earth his Death Wish may just come true... Mexico!
Still a wanted man in Mexico, Riley cuts the safety line grounding him to his life to try and catch the crooked and seemingly bullet-proof Senator Pritchard, red-handed. Little does he know that upon arriving to his destination, dark and powerful forces are already plotting his untimely demise.
At the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, a chance encounter with a desperate man from the plague-ridden village of San Cristobal, forces Riley to put aside his obsession with Pritchard in order to alert the world to what is really happening to the people of Mexico. But before he can help them, the sadistic Generalisimo Jorge Cortes will bleed Riley, torture him, and introduce him to the infamous, and inescapable Black Box.
Now, Cortes and everyone else knows Riley's back in Mexico and they are all out to stop him from reporting the truth. Luckily, with the help of Sancho, a homeless teenage car thief, Maria Ramos, a caring hospice nurse, and the Zapatista Rebels, Riley will attempt to expose a cover-up that will have world-wide ramifications.
The clock is ticking as German Virologist and Epidemiologist, Dr. Manfred Zobel, races to find a cure for the mysterious virus plaguing the Chiapas territories and wiping out the thousands of villagers. Reluctantly, Zobel must kidnap Riley and Ramos and bring them to a secret, privately-funded facility, deep in the heart of Valle de Bravo. Compounding the problems, Riley is now exposed to virus itself.
As Riley gets closer to the truth, he realizes that San Cristobal is the key to the mystery he must unravel, but doing this will require the consider political influence only one man has: his nemesis, Senator Daniel Pritchard. There is not enough pride in Riley to swallow in order for him to contact Pritchard, but he must!
The powerful forces beyond Riley's control, like the Governor of Mexico, Roberto Chavez, an ambitious politician and presidential hopeful, will stop at nothing to see Riley disappear with the damning information he carries. To insure he never again leaves Mexico, General Cortes will issue a "Death Order" for Riley to be shot on site. But for that to happen, Cortes will have to raze the village of San Cristobal and clear any witnesses Riley may have come into contact with.
As Riley and the others race back to Mexico City for the International Summit on the Environment to notify the world leaders of the impending dangers, a grand finale awaits. Riley has just one chance, one calculation that must be executed perfectly in order to succeed. If Riley fails, it is not only his life that will be lost, but the lives of thousands, maybe even millions that will be lost.
