Male Voice (V.O.)
Father...
(long, long pause)
This is what I’ve done with my life.
CUT TO:
CU: Computer screen. The camera sees the following text as it is being typed in:
Male Voice (V.O.)
(as the words are typed,
the voice over says them)
The Ohio Players... Slave... Dayton... Sun...
Lakeside... Johnnie Wilder and Heatwave...
Platypus.. Shadow...
My good friend Junie Morrison...
All from right here. Dayton. Like I said to people.
Father...
There’ve been losses along the way.
Many losses along the way.
Roger and Zapp.
(angry now)
And STUPID STUPID DEATHS. STUPID!
WASTEFUL DEATHS... THE DEATH OF TALENT!
DISSOLVE TO:
ECU: The computer screen. A face can be seen dimly reflected in the screen. The face stares intently as an icon is activated. Slowly, a program loads. Finally, the words “The Reality of a Fantasy” float across the screen.
Male Voice (V.O.)
So Father... This is how it’s been since
I left St. John’s... left... the church and
the Church... left me.
Since they tore down St. John’s and they
tore out the heart of where we lived.
(sadly)
Father, forgive them for what they did...
To themselves. To each other.
FADE IN
SFX: Montage of videos, clips, headlines, etc., about the shooting deaths of Tupac Shakur and “BIGGIE” Smalls interspersed with shots of cars “hopping” (the pounding beat of modern rap), Black youth and white youth with gang attire (again the pounding beat of rap), then fades to slow, relaxed shots of a quiet residential street; the cars are vintage Fifties and in the last shot we see the name of the street: “Calm Street,” then back to the fast montage of rapper/shootings along and all of this should move blindingly fast as does
AUDIO: Montage of music, BLARING LOUD on the soundtrack: a MIX of rap by Tupac and “BIGGIE,” played at the same time, along with generic rap/hip-hop beats along with funk from Zapp, which cut to: VERY LOUD, VERY EXPLOSIVE GUNSHOTS AT THE END AND THEN MIXED IN UNDER SHOTS OF CALM STREET AND THEN VERY SLOWLY FADING INTO AUDIBILITY IS TOMMY EDWARDS’ “IT’S ALL IN THE GAME”
FADE TO:
“Calm Street” street sign very briefly
AUDIO: slowly fading to monaural and low volume “It’s All in the Game”
FADE TO:
EXT. THE FRONT STEPS OF A SMALL HOME. (ALL SCENES NOW IN BLACK AND WHITE, UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED)
A young African American boy of six sits patiently on the steps. Sounds of children playing, birds chirping and muted sound of “It’s All in the Game,” as if heard from an open window, as well as cars passing by and people walking “in front of” him; these things do not distract him. He is staring fixedly in front of himself. He is waiting.
Footsteps are heard coming down the sidewalk toward his house, and his eyes slowly watch an advancing figure walk closer and closer to the front of his house. The camera sees only a shadow on the grass, but that shadow is coming closer to him. Then all the sounds of a mail box opening and closing are heard. The mailman’s footsteps move on to the next house. Not until the footsteps are silent and the mailman has moved far down the block does the young boy jump up, and now he is all action. He jumps up and runs towards the mailbox.

(-cont.-)
The door to the mailbox “squeaks” open, and the boy looks at a packet of mail. From within the packet of mail, a GOLD GLINT is suddenly seen, and the boy goes towards that envelope. In a tight close up, the camera sees the rich blue of the return address: The White House.
The young boy rips open the envelope, and opens the letter.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT: Standing outside, he holds in his hands, IN FULL COLOR, EXTERIOR view of White House
DISSOLVE TO:
INT: OVAL OFFICE
But this shot FITS in the letter the young boy is holding. All through these shots, it is clear that the camera is seeing what the young boy holds in his hand. The effect should be that this young boy holds the OVAL OFFICE in his hands: he does not understand the magnitude of what he is “seeing”/reading.
PRESIDENT (V.O.)
(The President’s voice is heard in full surround.
It is the voice of Presidential authority.)
“Dear John: While it is most gratifying to know that the
young people of America are excited about the new space
program we are developing, it is important that you stay
in school in order to develop your mind for the coming challenges
presented by the Soviet Union’s space program.
