SCREEN BACK TO BLACK
SFX: SLOW FADE UP FROM SILENCE TO SOUNDS OF RADIO STATIONS, TV SETS ALL TUNED TO DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES AND CHANNELS... IT IS A CACOPHONY OF CONFUSION... OVER THE JUMBLE OF NOISE OCCASIONAL ANGRY SHOUTS CAN BE DETECTED...AND THE SOUNDS OF HEAVY STEEL DOORS OPENING AND CLOSING... ONLY THE SOUNDS...
THEN A SLOW FADE UP FROM BLACK SCREEN (CREDITS RUN OVER BLACK SCREEN DURING OPENING SOUND MONTAGE)
ECU: The face of a handsome African-American man. The face is set, rigid. If there are emotions in this man, they are held in check, and only the blinking of his eyes lets us know he is alive. He wets his lips now and then; his eyes are awake and alert.
His face will fill the screen as the (SFX fade up):
SFX: Fade gradually to a volume level clearly some feet from where the man is sitting...
ECU: The camera watches as he watches... something... He sets his teeth as...
ANNCR. (from background SFX):
Randall Longstreet, owner and president of radio stations KRNB-FM and KRB-AM, was arrested today in the shooting death of reputed drug dealer Ron Diamond.
The shooting of Ron Diamond is a bizzare twist in the tragic death of Longstreet's daughter, Genifer Longstreet. When he was killed, Ron Diamond was returning to his suburban Oakdale home after being questioned in the drug-overdose death reported on Newscenter Seven this morning.... Longstreet's daughter was also a KRNB personality.
(FOR A SPLIT SECOND, THE FACE OF THE MAN IS REPLACED BY THE IMAGE OF TWO MEN GRAPPLING WITH EACH OTHER: IT IS TOO FAST TO TELL WHO THEY ARE... WHERE THEY ARE. ANNCR. (continued):
Genifer Longstreet was found dead yesterday in a house on the city's west end... a house reported to be a hang-out for crack users. Diamond was called in for questioning because County Recorder's documents list Diamond as the owner of record...
ECU: continues to hold on the face of man. The lips are compressed and a look of slow fury begins. As his eyes close and the ANNOUNCER'S voice fades under to:
LS: A street lit with the revolving blue and red lights of a police cruiser, parked behind a brightly lighted ambulance. A stretcher is being carried toward it. The body on the stretcher is covered.
At the cruiser, a police officer holds her hands over her two-way radio mic. as her partner talks to her.
The scene is silent (no sirens, no voices, etc.) and there is a quick cut back to the face of the man. He blinks... his eyes being to moisten QUICK FADE TO:
MS: Two well-dressed men are walking up a fashionably-lit walk; behind them, lawn lights, porch lights signal that this is an "upscale" neighborhood. There is no traffic, there are no people on the street. As the men walk, whispers of wind blow newly-fallen leaves around their feet; the leaves blow every which way, but some land amongst the still-blooming flowers. It is fall, but early in autumn... neither man wears an overcoat, just a suit coat.
The two men are white, older. They are grim, hushed; neither looks at the other as they slowly walk past the low lamps of the yard.
MCU: One of the men reaches for a brass door-knocker and raps several times, sharply. He waits, leans towards the door and listens, then raps again with the door-knocker. Suddenly, after a few long seconds, their still figures are lit by what must be lights coming on the house. The door begins to swing slowly open...
ECU: The face... The same face. The man blinks; there is movement. The face moves forward, toward the camera. He blinks once more; then the face sets again, but the eyes are attentive..
MS: The man is now "back" watching a TV set: the source of the voice heard earlier. On the screen, a well-coiffed anchor man looks into the camera:
