This novel of suspense starts with a fictional order of teaching nuns, soon to be disbanded -- a scenario happening more and more often in modern times as members of religious orders grow old and numbers decline.
The Sisters individually own nothing, but as an order they hold a fortune in assets that ultimately would go to the Vatican. Enter three former students of one of the Sisters’ schools, who devise a plan to grab the money for themselves.
Sharp-edged Margot, complex Kristin and determined Janet merge their talents to deceive the nuns into “donating” millions of dollars to nonexistent charities — created by the three conspirators. But they aren't prepared for what happens when the scheme launches a chain reaction of terrifying, even deadly consequences.
The author, taking a deceptively calm setting, then carries the reader into a web of secrets, con artists, a missing plane, dangerous lies, tropical islands, love, betrayal, and lethal choices.
The action happens in settings from New England to Quebec, Great Britain, the Caymans and Africa, and involves a startling assortment of people, some of them innocently and others far from innocently. Among the characters are several very human Sisters, a cigar-smoking Bishop, a daredevil RAF pilot, a shady Caribbean lawyer, a few priests, luxury yacht owners, and a couple of sinister Nigerian gangsters.
In this reflection of the real world the good do not always prosper. Nor do the not so good always flounder, nor, for that matter, do things always turn out as the reader might expect or wish.
