In the early 1950s, Scott Taney's life is uprooted when he learns that he must leave his father and step-mother’s house and live with his retarded mother and grandparents in the heart of the Negro community. After the move, Scott falsifies his address so he can finish his education with his friends.
Scott struggles to maintain his former life. He works after school to pay off his car, makes up stories to account for his absences from school functions, and confronts a Negro who hates him and calls him white trash.
Eventually, Scott is caught lying and is forced to transfer to the school near his mother’s home. He is befriended by the Negro family next door and spends many enjoyable hours with them. His racist family calls him a nigger lover and orders him to leave. With no place to go, he moves in with the Negro family. The blind Negro grandmother possesses uncommon wisdom, and she teaches Scott the meaning of love and compassion, and how to overcome discrimination.
Scott discovers that he’s able to forgive his mother and takes the first steps toward maturity and independence, confident that he has what it takes to succeed in life.
