It was a constant battle while they dug a grave and consigned all that was mortal of John Tippet to his last, lonely resting-place. Nor would they leave then; but remained to fashion a rude headstone from a crumbling out-cropping of sandstone and to gather a mass of the gorgeous flowers growing in such great profusion around them and heap the new-made grave with bright blooms. Upon the headstone Sinclair scratched in rude characters the words: HERE LIES JOHN TIPPET ENGLISHMAN KILLED BY TYRANNOSAURUS 10 SEPT. A.D. 1916 R.I.P. ~ ~ ~ Edgar Rice Burroughs created one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture, Tarzan of the Apes, and it is impossible to overstate his influence on entire genres of popular literature in the decades after his enormously winning pulp novels stormed the public's imagination.

The third book in Burrough's Caspak series-which also includes The Land That Time Forgot and The People That Time Forgot-Out of Time's Abyss is fully enjoyable as a standalone tale. Here, Bradley, survivor of an earlier expedition to the lost continent of Caspak, near Antarctica, has been sheltered at Fort Dinosaur, and now decides to brave the dangers of the land's barbarian men and brutal dinosaurs in an attempt to get home to England.

First published in book form in 1924, and a favorite of serious devotees of the author, this is one of Burrough's most thrilling science-fiction adventure stories.
