This Halcyon Classics ebook contains two English translations of the French epic poem THE SONG OF ROLAND (La Chanson de Roland). THE SONG OF ROLAND is the earliest surviving piece of French Literature, and was probably written in its final form between 1140 and 1170 AD. The poem is a Chanson de Geste, and story of a hero and his mighty deeds.

The story told in the poem is based on the Battle of Roncevaux Pass on August 15, 778, in which the rearguard of Charlemagne's retreating Franks, escorting a rich collection of booty gathered during a failed campaign against the Moors in Spain, was attacked by Basques in the Pyrenees. In this engagement, the trapped soldiers were slaughtered to a man.
