The Doctrine of Necessity Examined

This is Peirce's examination of the doctrine of philosophical necessity, the belief that "all things, past, present, and to come, are precisely what the Author of nature really intended them to be, and has made provision for." He concludes with the words: "I believe I have thus subjected to fair examination all the important reasons for adhering to the theory of universal necessity, and have shown their nullity."
