WARNING TO PARENTS at the end of this description. The Bobbsey Twins series is about two sets of twins, Nan & Bert (age 8) and Flossie & Freddie (age 4). They progressively get older at the beginning of the series, until the ages of 12 & 8, then seem to stay the same age beyond that. The Bobbsey Family’s lifestyle progresses accordingly to the year each book was written (horse-drawn carriages become automobiles, etc.) The books concern the everyday antics and mischief children get into as they grow. This first book is mainly concerned with character introduction and development.
NOW THE WARNING. These books are presented EXACTLY as they were in the year they were written. Words commonly used back then, in many cases have become taboo in today’s society. The treatment of the African-American characters is so stereotypical, it is almost unbelievable. Your children will have questions. Be prepared to explain how far society has progressed in a hundred years.
