Tom Sawyer is surely one of the most famous characters ever created in American fiction. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" begins with Tom playing hooky and getting into trouble with his strict Aunt Polly.
As his punishment, Tom must whitewash the picket fence on Saturday, a day that Tom would rather be fishing or doing just about anything else. He comes up with the idea to pretend painting the fence is great fun and gets all his friends to join in the "fun" and even gets some little gifts in the process. Soon enough the fence is finished and Tom can go have some fun.
Tom then meets the new girl in town, Becky Thatcher, and they hit it off immediately. He then meets a new friend named Huckleberry Finn who is the envy of all the boys because he doesn't go to school and he swears and does whatever he wants. Huck's father is the town drunk so Huck has no discipline at all.
Huck and Tom sneak out one night to go bury a cat in the cemetery. While they are there, they witness Injun' Joe committing murder. And so the adventures begin!
