The Thirty-Nine Steps" is a famous adventure novel primarily because of its film adaptations - especially Alfred Hitchcock's version. The hero is Richard Hannay, an expatriate Scot just back to London from South Africa. Europe is close to war.
Hannay runs into a freelance spy named Franklin Scudder who asks for his help. He claims to have uncovered a German plot to murder the Greek Premier and to steal British plans.
A few days later, Scudder is murdered. Hannay fears that he may be next and he doesn't report Scudder's murder to the police.
He returns to Scotland only to read in the paper the next morning that the police are looking for him. As a matter of fact, quite a few people are after Hannay and the adventures begin.
Alfred Hitchcock was one of John Buchan's biggest fans and made this into a movie in 1935. A classic thriller for the ages!
