Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre's early years are not pleasant ones. She is an orphan being raised by her wealthy, strict Aunt. She is sent away to a miserable boarding school and her best friend dies while they are in attendance there.

Jane goes on to be a teacher and eventually accepts a position as a governess at Thornfield manor. The man of the manor is a dark, passionate man named Rochester and Jane falls secretly in love with him. Jane is devastated when Rochester brings home a beautiful but vicious woman named Blanch Ingram. Jane is depressed, feeling certain that Rochester will propose to Blanche. To her surprise, Rochester actually proposes to Jane.

When the blissful wedding day arrives, a Mr. Mason yells out at the ceremony that Rochester is already married to Mr. Mason's sister, Bertha. Rochester does not deny the claim and tells everyone that Bertha has gone insane. When the wedding party returns to Thornfield, they witness Bertha crawling all around the mansion on four legs and growling like an animal.

Jane learns that Rochester keeps Bertha hidden in the rooms on the third floor. Seeing this as an impossible situation, Jane flees from Thornfield.

This begins Jane Eyre's story that finds her living anything but the life of the Lady of Thornfield.
