Written by Wilkie Collins in 1868, "The Moonstone" is set in Seringapatam, India in 1799. A violent, cruel man named John Hercastle has stolen the large sacred Hindu yellow diamond called the Moonstone. Years before, the diamond has been taken off of the forehead of the Moon-God in a Brahman shrine.
Many years later, back in Britain, Hercastle gives the diamond to a young Englishwoman named Rachel Verinder on the day of her eighteenth birthday. Rachel wears the diamond at the party for all to see. That night, the diamond is stolen from her room. Thus begins the saga of The Moonstone and all of the turmoil, unhappiness, misunderstandings and bad luck that it brings.
"The Moonstone" is widely regarded as the precursor to modern mystery and suspense novels. T.S. Eliot called it "the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels." Dorothy L. Sayers said it is "Probably the very finest detective story ever written."
