It was 6:45 Friday morning February 11, 2002 six months after the bombing of the World Trade Center. The massive cleanup was still underway. The early morning sun was casting a heavy smog-filled shadow over Manhattan’s towering buildings announcing the epiphany of a city that was under siege for a few brief moments.
An understandable atmosphere of fear and gloom hung over the city as the high rise dwellers scurried along the bustling sidewalks heading for work There was an empty space, a void, not only in the hearts and minds of all New Yorkers but also at ground Zero, one block north of Park Row and two blocks south of the Lincoln Tunnel, where the city’s prized buildings trademarked the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center once stood.
The city had just witnesses one of the most disastrous events in U.S. History. A middle-eastern fanatical terrorist group had decided to attach an Icon on Unites States soil and declare an unannounced Holy War. A repeat of Pearl Harbor this time civilians were involved. It left an indelible mark on a democratic society perpetrated by a terrorist cult set on destroying the freedom and constitutional rights of a free nation.
As the city was coming to life to its new challenges suddenly and shockingly a fire alarm began to shout out for help. It was a-call-to-arms bringing back a horrifying memory. Someone had pulled one of the mechanical boxes on 125th Street in Harlem. The spring wound mechanism alternately opens and closes an electrical circuit giving a coded number as to a specific location.
The recently assigned Deputy Fire Chief at precinct 57 in downtown Manhattan and his crew were racing to a fire in a tenement building in the Harlem. They did not find a blazing only smoke fire and the dead body of an Al Qaeda operative taped to a chair in his apartment with two bullet holes in his head.
This was just the beginning. Bodies of Al Qaeda operatives began showing up in several of the major cities. Major Allen Robert was recruited from the CIA to the S(trategic )
T(ask) F(orce) a division of the newly formed Homeland Securities Agency to head up the investigate of the murders.
After discovery of the third victim, Allen renamed his file from “Operative Murders” to “The Chameleon.”. Reason: according to the witnesses’ reports, it appeared that the description of the same man had been seen leaving the scene of the murders wearing different disguises.
Allen was able to tie the murders to the same person. The victims were tied to a chair with two bullet holes in the forehead and had three numbers written on their wrists with a black marker.During his investigation, Allen uncovered a conspiracy that began with a Dr. Blakely the Director of Oakhill Veterans Clinic in Long Island, New York to the Pentagon and ultimately to the oval office.
After a great deal of soul searching Allen was forced to make a decision to either expose all those involved and bring them to justice or look the other way. The story led the reader to a very unpredictable conclusion.
