History and fiction are interwoven during the actual 5-day visit of Selassie, The Lion of Judah. With him is the head of his personal security force, Colonel Bekele Kebede, the Ethiopian who had saved Alex's life in Korea and who is also a covert agent for the U.S. His CIA handler is Gerry O'Keefe, a lifelong friend of Alex, the one responsible for Alex's involvement. Alex repays his debt to the Ethiopian, helping him defend the Emperor. He enlists the aid of friends in Jamaica and involves the Rastafarians, a messianic cult that considers Selassie divine. He also comes to realize that his infatuation with Maria Palmer, an American writer living in Jamaica, is much more than that.
Alex and his CIA friend O'Keefe, who is also trying to uncover a mole, a traitor within the CIA, face an array of questions as they peel away the layers of subterfuge to get at the reality of what is happening.
