Walter L. Harris, Jr. fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a Detroit police officer on September 19, 1994. For the next nine-and-a-half years, he served meritoriously in some of Detroit’s most dangerous precincts and units, including vice. He joined the Executive Protection Unit (EPU) and served for five years beginning with Chief of Police Isaiah McKinnon, Mayor Dennis Archer, and finally with Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
He left the EPU when he could no longer remain silent to the corruption going on in the Kilpatrick Administration. He blew the whistle that not only brought justice but also revitalized City Hall. He paid a heavy price due to the subsequent harassment and veiled threats to his life. Walter, his wife, and three children were forced to leave their hometown.
