New spy novel shows Israel close to losing Six Day War

Avraham Azrieli takes readers into the inner workings of Israeli intelligence services on the brink of the Six Day War in his historical fiction novel, “The Jerusalem Inception”

COLUMBIA, Md. – In Avraham Azrieli’s new spy novel “The Jerusalem Inception” (ISBN 1451549512), the protagonist abandons the path of rabbinical ordainment for the love of a beautiful Mossad agent and joins the fight to save his country.

Relying on recent disclosures about what instigated the greatest Mideast war, “The Jerusalem Inception” tells the story of courageous yet flawed men and women who are engaged in a race to prevent a national calamity. It starts at the Talmudic seminary of Neturay Karta, a fiercely anti-Zionist Orthodox sect in Jerusalem, and continues through the corridors of power and the annals of covert operations as the Jewish state is caught in a titan match between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Faced with the most dangerous moment in Israel’s short history, the agents of the Mossad and its sister spy agencies will stop at nothing to prevent a second Holocaust.

The characters bring to life the divided city of Jerusalem in 1967, as the threat of a devastating Arab invasion sharpens every emotion and heightens ideological fervor, from religion to love, vengeance, patriotism and the most basic of all – individual and national survival. The protagonist, Jerusalem “Lemmy” Gerster, is the quintessential recruit, except that three conflicting forces vie for his future: His father grooms him for rabbinical leadership; his lover lures him out of Orthodoxy to share a secular and passionate life; and a sinister master spy sees in Lemmy a most promising candidate for a clandestine career. The suspense climaxes on the early morning of June 5, 1967, as Lemmy crosses the border into east Jerusalem carrying explosives on a mission that will determine Israel’s survival against the Arab nations and their Soviet patrons.

While the characters in “The Jerusalem Inception” are fictional, the story is told against real historical events involving the political and military leaders of the time, the dire conditions in the besieged city of Jerusalem, and Israel’s international isolation as it faces the Arab’s preparations to cloud the entire Jewish state with poisonous gas. A detailed bibliography of sources is appended to the novel.

Initial reviews are promising. “The dramatic outcome of the 1967 war continues to dominate the Middle East. If you want to know what really happened (and at the same time fall in love with a striking cast of unforgettable characters) then ‘The Jerusalem Inception’ is for you. In the best tradition of ‘Eye of the Needle’ and ‘The Bourne Identity,’ this one is a hit!” —Stephen J. Wall, author of ‘The Morning After’ and ‘On the Fly.’
