The tin roof of the Cottontail Saloon and Brothel crackled noticeably in the warming sun of the late October afternoon. The building sat undisturbed on a desolate plot amid the desert of western Nevada, bounded on two sides by man-made fractures in the landscape that lead away to miles of nothingness and solitude. Any semblance of moisture had long since been sucked from what passed for soil, leaving the two roads dry swaths of dirt as they crisscrossed the low scrub, kicking up stones and lingering curtains of dust whenever the occasional farm truck or semi rumbled past.
