In present-day Yucatán, PROFESSOR BRIAN AVERY and his assistant, TRAVIS DILLMAN, are working at what had been an archaeological dig until physicist SARAH GALLAGHER arrives and turns the project into something else entirely — a veritable behemoth of a construction project. It seems to Dillman that Avery resents the presence of Gallagher, but the reality is that, unbeknown to her, Gallagher is Avery’s daughter, and the uneasiness he has around her is caused by the fact that he has been unable to work up the courage to tell her of their true relationship. Avery confides to Dillman that his daughter’s gigantic project is actually a prototype time machine, centered between a series of particle accelerators, and that their jobs as archaeologists will become more fascinating than ever.
