LE MARQUIS DE VILLEMER, by George Sand, was adapted from her novel by the same title. The play was first presented at the Odéon theatre in Paris, on February 29, 1864, where it was a triumphant success.
In the story of the play, the Marquise de Villemer hopes to marry off her younger son Urbain, the Marquis de Villemer, to Diane, heiress to a great family fortune, just out of convent school. But Urbain finds his head turned by Caroline, the Marquise’s new secretary/companion. And Diane finds herself drawn to the Marquise’s older son, the Duke d’Aleria, a gambler and playboy whose recklessness has nearly bankrupted his family.
A society friend and frequent guest of the Marquise, the wealthy young widow Léonie d’Arglade, wishes to marry the glamorous and enviably-titled Duke herself. Over the course of a weekend in the country, she intentionally upsets the fragile rondelay; and the Marquise’s pride and prejudices jeopardize her sons’ happiness.
The play has roles for 4 women, 5 men
