Six courageous people struggle to rebuild broken lives in Gilded Age Denver.
Reclaiming a devastated life is one of the hardest tasks anyone can undertake. In this novel, set in Goldrush Denver of the 1880s, half a dozen desperate people seek a way to start over against all odds. There is Lorenzo "the Magnificent" Carthage, who had won several fortunes only to lose them and now is out of luck. There is Dixie Ball, once the queen of Telluride and now a chambermaid. There is Cornelia Kimbrough, caught in a painful marriage to a cold and controlling financier, and desperate to begin a worthwhile life on her own. A failed lawyer, Homer Peabody, Esq., Rose Edenderry, a struggling saloon girl, and Yves Poulenc, a poet dying of consumption, round out the novel's cast.
These people wrestle with their painful circumstances, and sometimes their own terrible weaknesses, to make their lives worth living. Some succeed, finding courage and grace; but one or two fall short. Here is their story, set in a fabulous moment in Colorado's history.
