If Diego Hidalgo closes his eyes and thinks he can remember his life before it all changed.
Diego Hidalgo’s parents immigrated to the United States from Latin America to attend college and obtain for themselves a piece of the American Dream. Over three decades they raised two sons, owned their own home and became respected members of their community. But their American Dream was incomplete...they had yet to put their children through college.
They’d done their part, now it was time for Diego to do his. He must enter the Latin diaspora and navigate the endless distractions of collegiate life to make his family, his neighborhood, la raza, proud. Easier said than done. There’s the problem of his hometown girlfriend, his love of family and the realities of race in America.
This is the story of Diego finding his way out of the old neighborhood and into the new world. The first of a quarterly series chronicling Diego's road to adulthood, "The Road to Goodbye" describes the world Diego will soon long for and be unable to return to.
