Prepare to enjoy a rare glimpse into the vault of Richard Bishop. Who was he you ask? Well, he was my grandfather, and a darn good artist! Much of his work has spent the past sixty years in a giant scrapbook being passed down to my mother and to me. Someday it will be passed down to my children. In these yellowing pages, I found birthday cards going back to his childhood, report cards, and mostly his fantastic art! He drew and drew and drew…on anything possible at any moment possible. Some of his drawings are meticulously thought out in advance; some are clearly inspiration from the spur of the moment and are drawn on scrap paper, notebook paper, stationary, and even a local Denver area menu. This collection which encompasses a small fraction of his work, spans from his time in the military in the mid 1940’s to his time as a father and husband around 1970. You will see many different styles and techniques; pencil, pen, negative space, schematic, pressings, paint, etc… All of this art shows his interest in transportation, military life, and even nature. There are more than thirty five drawings here presented in high resolution scans featuring the latest technology in color correction and contrasting. Besides this introduction, there is no text because the art speaks for itself. I lost my Grandpa Bishop way too early and I would love to just spend five more minutes with him to listen to his stories and hear him describe each of these pictures. In some way he does speak through these pictures and the stories he tells visually are always amazing! Come and enjoy the lost art from Grandpa’s Art Vault.
