On my first day of work at the prison I had a flash back to years ago on my first day as a student at the University of Illinois.
I was walking, by myself, along the center of the main part of campus, on my way to the Student Union Cafeteria. Although the walk seemed miles long it was only about a block. As I strolled along I looked up at the trees lining the sidewalk and they seemed to be a mile high, reaching for the sky, and I felt like a very tiny person, enclosed and all alone.
Now, years later, I had parked my car in the lot in front of the prison. I walked to the gate and pushed the call button. As I looked up I could see the coiled razor wire which seemed to be reaching to the sky.
After going through security I was now in a wide hallway with a very high ceiling. In the distance to my left I could see another enclosed control room with several officers on duty, some standing and some sitting, all appearing very serious, and to be observing monitor screens. I turned to my right and began slowing walking down the hallway, noting how clean and shiny the floor was. There was no other person in the hall. Looking up I could see the very high ceiling. There were a few windows, narrow, and very high above the floor. This is when I was reminded of my first walk on the University campus--lonely.
