You never know what baggage a child brings into a classroom, or the issues a teacher hides. I am The Children I Teach is a story about the effects and consequences of a legacy of abuse and the impact it has on relationships. Readers explore the thoughts and feelings of two eighth grade teachers, Ms. Brown and Ms. Wilson and two students who fight to hide their demons inside and outside of the classroom.

Ms. Brown and Ms. Wilson have different perceptions of the inner city students they teach at Harlem Ridge City School. Ms. Brown doesn’t like children and believes she is teaching the future delinquents of tomorrow. Ms. Wilson believes that all students deserve a second chance and the opportunity to get out of their drug infested neighborhood with a good education.

The Boy and the Red hair freckle face girl may look like your average students, but their exposure to life experiences indicates adulthood. Coping with abuse, drugs, and sex these two students try to maintain a normal childhood; looking for answers from the women they spend most of their days with- their teachers.

Ms. Brown and Ms. Wilson’s relationships with their students, show that if you take the time to look and listen to the ones they teach, you will see a reflection of yourself. Will they ever know self healing?
