This is a novella of sorts surrounding the relationship of father and son. A successful man named McCormick moves west after the Civil War with his young bride. His sins there are punished, by man or God, and his son, in many ways inherits this stain in his own life. It is a philosophic view on man, son and father, and the tale we invariably tell.
