Kenny Hobbs reflects on his life as a humble auto mechanic, father and husband, and he writes a book about it all... recounts this book-within-a-book to his estranged son in a humorous but sometimes shocking way. He looks back over the years from World War II to the present day in America with nostalgia, and he describes the major events, how they impacted his family. Kenny also recalls the movies of the times, and the popular songs... sees them all as milestones. He screwed up his marriage and yet, through it all, he has few regrets. In fact he seems to have learned a great deal from his errors and becomes enlightened, proves his tolerance, his maturity and open minded nature. These qualities are finally recognized by his son (who has his own burdens to unload), and the two men reconcile their differences in an emotional ending.
