It is a time far in the future after the breakup of the republic. Planets have lost space flight and have reverted to, in some cases, savagery.
Sam is just a cook in the City. He steals food for people who the city rulers have deemed unworthy, and of course, he gets caught. he is given the most horrible punishment possible, his freedom. he can go anywhere he wishes, do whatever he wants, as long as he does so outside the protecting walls of the city.
Left in the desert to die, Sam is discovered by a wandering robotic transport. he is taken to the base where robotic doctors save his life. A massive advanced artificial intelligence computer called CenComp explains that it needs a human to give it direction. Sam agrees and finds himself to be a Commander in the defunct Navy of the United Star Republic. Using hypnotic training, Sam is educated, but as the computer cautions him, he may have the knowledge, but not the experience.
Sam finds a Star destroyer in the base garage and orders it rebuilt, intending to send it out to find more humans. He is tricked into taking command of the ship and it's own A.I. computer that calls itself Charlie. Charlie can run the ship by himself, although as a computer, he has no desire to go anywhere or to do anything without a human order.
The ship travels to Demerest where he finds Jared Pike and his wife, Dr. Lori Pike. They join Sam after barely escaping from the local police and enter into service in the Navy. While looking for another planet to travel to, they receive a distress signal and travel to Marcus Prime where they rescue a few hundred soldiers, the sole survivors of a pirate attack against their planet. their highest ranking officer, Lieutenant Myra Jefferson agrees to join with Sam while he tracks down the pirates who destroyed her planet.
They visit Amadio with its huge library and are caught in the library by treachery and have to burn their way out. Returning to Marcus, they find what they believe to be the pirate fleet, but instead find Joe Solving, a freighter captain.
Traveling to Bowlin, Joe's home world, they find themselves involved in planetary politics and a civil war that could mean the destruction of their ship.
More adventures await the ship and it's small company before final victory over the pirates and a surprising look at who those pirates actually are.
Hidden in this story are topics of genetics, greed, corruption, and also a warning to our own world of what could happen here.
