Bloch was born in Copenhagen and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. Important for the development of his style was a stay in Italy from 1859 to 1866. He is best known for his depictions of Christ, some of which appeared on church altars throughout Denmark and southern Sweden. Hans Christian Andersen advised his artist friend to: "Write on your canvas; write your seal on immortality...." Bloch is generally considered to be one of the finest religious artists of all time.
