Is the veil between this world and the long dead past a curtain of iron or a gossamer membrane more ethereal and far more permeable than we know? Does evil grow and perpetuate with each succeeding generation? These are the questions that haunt Paul Trefzger.
Paul, a successful doctor, divorced father of two and the most pragmatic of men, is the least likely candidate for a haunting. But he finds himself in just such a situation. A dyed in the wool city boy, born and bred in Chicago, Paul is transplanted to Carlinville, a sleepy little town nestled in the hills and hollers of Southern Indiana. On the outside it is a quaint, charming, little community but it hides ugly little secrets from the long dead past. Ask any of the locals about The Consort or the little ghost child that haunts the Cherry Blossom Bridge and they’ll laugh with false bravado about The Legend of the Consort and the phantom Lilly. After all, everyone knows that old yarn is just a story that kids tell to scare themselves on Halloween. But is it?
The most unlikely people have seen the little apparition waiting, waiting, always waiting, clutching a small green stone to her breast. What is she waiting for? No one seems to know, or remember. Certainly not Georgie Stubblefield, a middle aged man with the mental capacity of a seven year old child, or the little girl, Twyla, the product of an alcoholic mother and her reprobate boyfriend, Oscar Beatty. But our Lilly hasn’t forgotten. Oh no. There’s so much at stake, the air is rife with blood and murder! The demon heart that trapped Lilly so long ago, still prowls the hills and valleys. A Good Samaritan is needed. Is Paul Trefzger that man? Does he have what it takes to look into the eye of the demon? Or will there be yet another lost child joining Lilly at the bridge?
