INFELICE.... IS A ROMANCE THAT HAS THE BONUS OF TWO HEROINES, A MOTHER AND HER DAUGHTER!
513 PAGES IN PRINT!
The mother, Minnie, suffers an underage clandestine marriage to a young student, Cuthbert Laurance. Cuthbert's father hides the evidence of this marriage, spirits Cuthbert away and threatens poor Minnie if she ever reveals the marriage.
Deserted, poor, pregnant Minnie changes her name and runs for her safety. Eventually, she places her young daughter, Regina, in a Catholic convent. Minnie, ultimately with hard work, becomes a much lauded Actress under the name of Odile Orme.
Meanwhile, Cuthbert has entered a bigamous marriage to a wealthy woman and has another daughter. They meet again in Paris, but Cuthbert doesn't recognise his true wife in the beautiful, remote actress.
Regina, at age 10, is removed from the convent and boarded with one of her two guardians, Minister Dr Hargrove. She is content at the parsonage and develops a close relationship with her guardian's Missionary nephew, Douglas. Her only contact with her mother is through an exchange of letters. Years go by.
After the death of Dr Hargrove, she is placed in the home of her remaining guardian, her mother's attorney, Mr Erle Palma. Mr Palma, has an unsympathetic widowed step-mother and a fiesty step-sister, Olga. He has little interest in a teen-age schoolgirl.

There are a few constant themes in Augusta Evans Wilson's romances. The hero is generally 15 (or more) years older than the heroine, he is usually agnostic or at best a man of little faith, and through some chance of fate he is the heroine's mentor, guardian or protector.
The heroine is usually orphaned, in actual fact or in circumstances. She is always, always very intelligent. She is steadfastly honest, independent, direct and devout.

This is a drama/romance about a woman who gets dumped by her hubby, and their daughter who is raised by other people as a result. It takes place in Paris, Italy, NYC and an unnamed American small town. No years are given, and nothing in the story gives any suggestion of the time, but I'm guessing that the action takes place in the last years of the 1800s. It's a long book, so if you're the type who reads every word you can expect to spend a few days with it.

This is an entertaining novel. Will the heroines make the right decisions or allow bitterness and supposed duty to jeopardize their chances at happiness?
