George Stillman Hillard (September 22, 1808 – January 21, 1879) was an American lawyer and author who brushed shoulders with some of Boston’s noteworthy figures of the day, including working with Charles Sumner and Nathanael Hawthorne. Besides legal work, he was heavily involved in literature and politics, delivering orations and writing a series of books.

Among his works was Life and Campaigns of George B. McClellan, Major-General, U. S. Army, which he published in 1864 while McClellan was running for president. In addition to providing a descriptive overview of McClellan’s life and his time in command during the Civil War, Hillard’s work is often sympathetic toward the general, who has had a negative reputation for being slow and overly cautious for over 145 years.

Though recent work by authors like Ethan Rafuse have dealt with McClellan in an evenhanded manner, Hillard’s work on McClellan remains valuable as a contemporaneous source of Civil War history and a demonstration that even then, there were other opinions about McClellan’s generalship.
