This is the true story of a sharecropper’s family growing up in the depression era in the mountains of Virginia and Kentucky. Married at the ages of thirteen and seventeen, the Johnsons struggled to raise a family of eleven children. The children worked in the fields of tobacco, corn, wheat, and cabbage that their father sharecropped. This is an account of the children coming of age and how they survived to make lives for themselves despite their lack of education. The many moves from farm to farm didn’t leave any memories of a place to return to. This is the story of the different roads the children took to discover what lay beyond the mountains. The search of two of those children took different paths; both took their own lives when they were young, leaving unanswered questions. Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, this is their struggle to find where they belonged.
