Miracles happen, so Eleanor Green, a reporter for a Connecticut daily, believes on the day she discovers her life's calling is to come to the aid of animals. When she lands a job in the animal protection movement a few days later, it only confirms her belief.

Her mother, however, issues a warning telling Green not to allow herself to be exploited for the movement.

Her first day on the job, she realizes that her boss, Honor Vine, is a tyrant. As the days and weeks pass, however, she falls deeply in love with the nature of the work. It is all she believed it would be. She acquaints herself with People Against Animal Cruelty's campaigns such as those for abandoned dogs and cats, abused farm animals, captive circus animals, hunted wildlife, or laboratory animals. She meets caring like minded people from across the country. In no time, her belief in the work is validated.

Yet, she and her colleagues find themselves often sick and exhausted from Honor Vine's demoralizing treatment. How long can she hold on for the sake of the animals? How much on behalf of the animals is too much?

On the nightmarish day when Vine is forced to pay for her abuse, Green finds herself threatened. Her mother comes to her rescue by revealing a secret.

From the first page, the reader senses that Green is walking into unknown and treacherous territory.
