The current financial and employment difficulties point to a dismal future for Americans. That depends on one’s point of view. From another perspective, it is government that is in crisis and not necessarily the American people.
Big government, created during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “New Deal”, has run its course. Deficit financing by government to maintain full employment is no longer feasible. Perpetual war is also no solution. What would work to create jobs in a stagnant economy? Shorter work time would offset the permanent increases in labor productivity as automation occurs. Trade protectionism - a.k.a. tariffs - would buffer the competition that American workers face from foreign workers earning extremely low wages.
This is a scenario of events that might take place in America under the new conditions. It is a political fantasy, if you will. It is a fantasy of how significant events move away from big government and devolve to local communities. Americans with increased time away from work will invent solutions to their economic problems. They will cultivate certain interests and skills whose product can be bartered.
One of the greatest changes that might take place would be in the field of education. The current gold-plated system serves mainly to stick graduates with student-loan debt. And so a leaner system of schooling might emerge that is also more sensitive to students’ needs. An important need is to be placed in jobs. Some schools might undertake responsibility for that function. Some might even become the nominal employer of their graduates. Education-centered communities might emerge that combine the functions of a school, a labor union, a job-placement firm, a temp agency, and a political-interest group.
In the end, the collapse of big government and related institutions might not be so bad. Americans would learn to create their own futures. We would be at peace with other nations. Let freedom ring!
