On April 20, 1999, when the Columbine shooting occurred, my neighbor was a peer counselor at Columbine High School. Many of the students in the library that day were her students. Since I was a native of Littleton, I had many personal connections to others who were in the library as well. I became the safe place for my neighbor to share her thoughts in the aftermath of the shootings, because I had years of trauma and grief training.
The part of this story that breaks my heart is the knowledge that the young adults already traumatized in the shooting in the library, now have to live everyday with the knowledge that the media story of what happened is not true. How many of them were silenced with shame and guilt and were told not to tell their stories? They lived with the horror and then they were forced to live a lie. The community that they needed to trust and the truth they needed to find eluded them.
Even though Emily and I have been friends for five years now, it was not until this interview that we each made discoveries about this horrendous experience that neither one of us knew before. I did not know that she was alone under the table with Cassie. I never knew that she had been interviewed by the Rocky Mountain News. We both found out the article we had each had input on, was never published. She did not know that Eric was the one who shot Cassie. We both read excerpts from Columbine for this interview. The book is chilling, but we found answers to many of our questions within it.
Excerpts:
Emily Wyant – Columbine Survivor
Emily was then saved by a Guardian Angel….as when Eric Harris shot Cassie, the gun came back at his face, he was off balance and it hit him in the nose …breaking it. Blood started pouring out of it. He turned his attention away from Emily hiding under the table. He walked away from the table….leaving Emily in shock and terrified beyond her control.
Greg Sampier - How do you Survive the Worst Day of Your Life?
As a Pastor and police officer, and as an Insurance agent for 35 years Greg had seen many people on the worst day of their life. October 7, 2007 he had the worst day of his life. Karen his wife had complained the day before of her knee hurting. She called Greg from her office asking him to come and get her....she was feeling very ill. He drove directly there. When he found her she was not breathing. A blood clot from her leg had made it to her lungs....
