On Mariposa, a person's tribe provides security, protection, whatever is needed. But someone who has no tribe has nothing. You could even say they are nothing. Hob is a slave with nothing to lose when he meets a woman from a fighting tribe and for the first time in a long time encounters compassion. But as Hob and Jahnsi struggle to prevent his capture by the unscrupulous Andre Ortega, someone from off-world begins a manhunt through Mariposa's slave quarters, looking for a certain slave.
