The novel The Invisible Man is about a brilliant young scientist named Griffin who has found a way to become invisible with the right combinations of drugs, including opium. He has robbed his father to finance his experiments and his father in turn commits suicide. Griffin then wanders around London, despairing that he cannot make himself visible again. He decides to go to small village called Iping in rural Sussex where he hopes he can figure out how to reverse the process. As the story progresses, Griffinís natural short temper and impatience (normal human emotions) deteriorate into extremes of violence and a desire to commit murder.
A science fiction novella that appeared in 1897 in its complete form, The Invisible Man first appeared in serialization in Pearsonís Weekly. Sales were slow but Wells received royalties for many years. He also made considerable income by optioning the film rights to Hollywood.
